Biennial and perennial flowers
Perennials are plants and flowers that come back year after year. Since you don't need to replant them, they are ideal for your garden beds, in combination with annuals and bulbs, as well as in containers and window boxes. Perennials often grow in size every year, so they can be subdivided and added to other seasonal plants and landscapes.
Perennials are only "hardy" to certain temperatures, depending on your gardening area. In Finland, in colder climates, some perennials are considered annuals because they cannot survive the winter. They are called tender perennials.
Biennial plants are very similar to annuals, except that their life cycle takes two years. As such, they usually bloom once every two years (unless you plant their seeds for several years in a row).
If you want your biennial plants to be present in the garden every year, simply start planting another seedling of the same plant in the second year after the first planting.
Here are some of the common biennials:
Pansies (Viola witrokka), Hollyhock (Alcea rosea)
Forget-me-not (Myosotis)
Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus)
Money Plant (Lunaria).
